Physical Education
At Leopold Primary School, we believe that physical activity is essential for pupils’ health, wellbeing, and development. PE not only supports physical growth, fitness, and coordination, but also contributes to emotional resilience, concentration, and social skills. Through sport and physical activity, pupils learn to work cooperatively, compete fairly, and understand their responsibilities both as individuals and as members of a team.
Intent
Our intent for PE is to inspire and encourage all pupils, regardless of background or ability, to engage in a wide variety of physical activities. We aim to:
- Promote agility, balance, coordination and overall physical fitness
- Develop teamwork, fair play and respect for others
- Encourage pupils to strive for their personal best and set meaningful goals
- Support pupils’ mental health, wellbeing and confidence through active participation
- Embed the school’s values through physical education and sporting experiences
We provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. Pupils gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to participate in a range of activities and sports, including invasion games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, swimming, and other physical challenges. Swimming lessons take place at Willesden Sports Centre, ensuring all pupils develop essential water safety and swimming skills. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in skills, understanding, and fitness, with opportunities to embed healthy habits and lifelong physical activity.
Implementation
PE at Leopold Primary School is delivered through high-quality lessons, giving pupils opportunities to:
- Develop core movement skills and sport-specific techniques
- Improve fitness, stamina, and coordination
- Engage in competitive and collaborative activities
- Participate in challenges that build confidence, resilience, and leadership
Extra-curricular activities and competitions
In addition to the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to take part in a range of enrichment opportunities, including:
- School clubs such as multi-sports, football, basketball and boxing
- Lunchtime sports sessions to provide additional daily activity
- Borough competitions, sports festivals, and local cluster fixtures
- Opportunities to experience new activities and develop teamwork, resilience, and leadership
Impact
Through our PE curriculum, lunchtime sessions and extra-curricular opportunities, pupils develop a lifelong love of physical activity, improved health, and strong social and emotional skills. They demonstrate confidence, resilience, and the ability to collaborate effectively. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are well-prepared to continue active participation in sports, fitness, and healthy lifestyles, both in school and beyond.
Supporting All Learners
Our PE curriculum is designed to be fully inclusive. Teachers use a range of strategies to ensure all pupils can access and enjoy PE, including:
- Adapted activities and differentiated teaching to meet individual needs
- Clear modelling, scaffolding and use of visual aids
- Encouraging participation and success in clubs, lunchtime sessions and competitions, whatever the child’s starting point
- Providing opportunities for pupils to develop personal fitness, confidence and enjoyment of sport
This ensures that pupils of all abilities can engage fully, develop skills and achieve success.
Supporting Learning at Home
Parents and carers can support physical development by encouraging regular activity outside of school, including:
- Participating in family sports and active games
- Visiting local parks, leisure centres, and sports clubs
- Encouraging exploration of new activities, hobbies or team sports
